Why Surat Is the World's Lab Grown Diamond Manufacturing Hub

If you’ve bought a diamond anywhere in the world, there’s a good chance it passed through Surat — even if you’ve never heard of the city. Here’s why this one place in Gujarat, India, became the center of gravity for global diamond manufacturing, and what that actually means if you’re sourcing from a Surat-based supplier.

The Numbers Behind the Claim

Surat processes roughly 90% of the world’s natural diamonds and around 25% of lab-grown diamonds globally, across nearly 6,000 cutting and polishing units in the city. That’s not a marketing figure — it’s the scale of a genuinely concentrated industrial ecosystem: decades of skilled labor, continuous investment in cutting technology, and a dense network of manufacturers, traders, and certification infrastructure operating in one place.

How This Actually Benefits a Buyer

Concentration like this creates real, practical advantages that scattered manufacturing can’t match. Skilled cutting and polishing labor is abundant and specialized, rather than a scarce resource a manufacturers have to compete hard to retain. Trade infrastructure — certification labs, import/export logistics, banking relationships built specifically around diamond trade — exists locally rather than requiring outside coordination. And the sheer density of the industry means quality and process standards get set and reinforced by proximity and competition, not just individual company policy.

A Newer Chapter - the Surat Diamond Bourse

In 2023, Surat opened the Surat Diamond Bourse — a purpose-built trade complex that became, officially, the world’s largest office building, surpassing the Pentagon. It’s a genuinely remarkable piece of architecture: nine interconnected towers, over 4,000 offices, and a design built specifically around how diamond trading actually happens.

Worth being honest about, though: the building’s rollout hasn’t been without real growing pains. Its location outside the main city, combined with limited transport connectivity, meant many established diamond businesses were slower to relocate there than initially expected, with some choosing to stay closer to Surat’s traditional trading areas or Mumbai’s more established Bharat Diamond Bourse. Infrastructure like a planned metro connection is still being built out. This doesn’t diminish what the Bourse represents for the industry’s future — it’s a genuinely accurate reflection of an industry mid-transition, building infrastructure ahead of where day-to-day trade has fully caught up yet.

What "Surat-Based" Actually Tells You About a Supplier

Being based in Surat isn’t a differentiator on its own — nearly every A serious lab-grown manufacturer is here, which is exactly the point. What it does tell you is that a supplier has access to the same deep labor pool, the same trade infrastructure, and the same certification ecosystem that the rest of the industry relies on. The actual differentiation between Surat-based suppliers comes down to what each company does with that access — manufacturing capability, quality control standards, and transparency — not the city itself.

Where OCS Diamond Fits

We’ve operated from Surat since 2018, as GJEPC and Surat Diamond Bourse members, manufacturing both CVD and HPHT in-house rather than reselling. Being part of this ecosystem is real and matters — but as above, it’s the starting point for what we do, not the whole story.
