Why We Certify Exclusively Through IGI
Certification choice is one of the first things a serious buyer checks, and it’s a fair question to ask directly: why IGI, and not GIA or another lab? Here’s the honest reasoning – including the part of the answer that isn’t purely in our favor.
IGI Is the Practical Standard for Lab-Grown Specifically
This is the core of the decision: IGI pioneered lab-grown diamond certification back in 2005 and grades more lab-grown diamonds than any other laboratory worldwide. GIA’s dominance is real, but it’s concentrated in natural diamonds and high-value resale contexts — for lab-grown stock specifically, IGI is the practical default across most of the industry, including major retailers dealing in volume.
IGI is also ISO 17025 accredited for both natural and lab-grown diamond grading, follows a structured intake-analysis-reporting process with randomized grader assignment between stages (specifically to prevent any single grader’s assessment from going unchecked), and every lab-grown stone they certify is automatically laser-inscribed on the girdle with an origin identifier and report number — so the physical stone and the paperwork stay permanently linked.
The Honest Tradeoff - IGI Runs Slightly More Lenient
Here’s the part we’re not going to gloss over: independent industry sources note that IGI’s grading tends to run roughly one grade more lenient than GIA’s on comparable stones — a diamond graded VS1 by GIA might come back as VVS2 from IGI, for example. This is a real, documented pattern, not a rumor, and it’s exactly why we built our own internal review process on top of certification rather than treating the IGI report as the only checkpoint.
Practically, this is also why we recommend a VS2 clarity floor for buyers prioritizing resale confidence — it builds in a margin against that leniency gap rather than buying right at the edge of a grade where the difference between labs matters most.
What This Means in Practice, Not Just in Theory
Every stone we sell goes through internal gemology review by our own team before it’s ever listed — checked against our own standard, not just the certificate. This two-step approach (our review, then independent IGI certification) is specifically designed to account for the leniency pattern above, rather than ignore it. A buyer working with us gets both an independently verifiable certificate and a second, internal check that most suppliers relying purely on the certificate don’t offer.
Why We Didn't Choose Dual Certification
Some suppliers offer both IGI and GIA to hedge on this exact question. We chose to standardize on IGI for operational consistency and because it’s the practical default for the specific product category we deal in — lab-grown, not natural, diamonds. If a specific order genuinely requires GIA certification, talk to our team directly; it’s not our default, but it’s not something we’ll pretend isn’t a legitimate ask either.
